METOCLOPRAMIDE HCL

Indications & Dose:

Symptomatic treatment of nausea and vomiting including that associated with acute migraine | Delayed (but not acute) chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting | Prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting

BY MOUTH, OR BY INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION, OR BY SLOW INTRAVENOUS INJECTION

Adult (body-weight up to 60 kg): Up to 500 micrograms/kg daily in 3 divided doses, when administered by slow intravenous injection, to be given over at least 3 minutes

Adult (body-weight 60 kg and above): 10 mg up to 3 times a day, when administered by slow intravenous

injection, to be given over at least 3 minutes

Hiccup in palliative care

BY MOUTH, OR BY INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION, OR BY SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTION

Adult: 10 mg every 6–8 hours

Nausea and vomiting in palliative care

BY MOUTH

Adult: 10 mg 3 times a day

BY SUBCUTANEOUS INFUSION

Adult: 30–100 mg/24 hours

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); diabetic gastroparesis;  chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (parenteral); facilitation of small bowel intubation; postoperative nausea and vomiting; prevention of aspiration pneumonitis presurgery*; slow gastric emptying*; gastic stasis in preterm infants*; vascular headache*; lactation deficiency*; diabetic cystoparesis*; esophageal variceal bleeding*, migrain.

BY MOUTH

Adult over 60kg

Orallyi.m or i.v : 10mg 3 times daily.

Under 60kg: 5mg three times daily. both max;0.5mg/kg body weight

Children  and young adults

Severe injectable; vomiting of unknown origin and vomiting associated with cytotoxic drugs and radiotherapy only upto 10kg/body weight, 1mg twice daily; 10-14kg 1mg 2-3 times daily;15-19kg; 2mg 2-3 times daily,  20-29kg 2.5mg, two to three times daily,30-59kg 5mg three times daily. or

Upto 1 year 1mg twice daily. Upto 1-3 year 1mg 2-3 times daily. Upto 3-5 years 2mg 2-3 times daily. Upto 5-9 years 2.5mg 2-3 times daily. Upto 9-14 years 5mg  2-3 times daily

Contraindications:

GI hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction or perforation of the GI tract, pheochromocytoma, seizure disorder.

Side Effects:

CNS: Dizziness, drowsiness, EPS (dystonia, parkinson like symptoms, akathisia, tardive dyskinesia 1 9%), fatigue, hallucinations, headache, restlessness, sedation, seizures, sleeplessness

CV: Bradycardia, hypertension, hypotension, supraventricular tachycardia

EENT: Visual disturbances

GI: Bowel disturbances, diarrhea, nausea

GU: Incontinence, urinary frequency

HEME: Agranulocytosis, leukopenia, methemoglobinemia (especially overdoses in neonates), neutropenia, porphyria

METAB: Amenorrhea, elevated al dosterone, galactorrhea, gynecomastia, impotence (hyperprolactinemia) 

SKIN: Rash, urticaria

MISC: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome

Cautions:

History of depression, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, anastomosis or closure of the gut, pregnancy & breast-feeding.

Cyclosporine: Increased bioBrands Available with Cost and serum concentrations of cyclosporine

Digitalis glycosides: Reduced serum digoxin concentration when coadministered with generic formulation

Ethanol: Increased sedative effects of ethanol/
