DIPHENOXYLATE + ATROPINE

Indications & Dose:

Diarrhea, reduction of ileostomy discharge


BY MOUTH


Adults: 4 tablet  initially then 2 tablet 4 hourly until under control.


4-8 years 1 tab three times daily, 9-12 years 1 tab 4 times daily, 13-16 years 2 tab three times daily.


Child:Under 4 year not recommended.


 

Contraindications:

Obstructive, jaundice, diarrhea associated with pseudomembranous enterocolitis or enterotoxin¬producing bacteria

Age <2 yr, acute ulcerative colitis (may induce toxic megacolon), severe hepatorenal disease


Pregnancy & breast-feeding: excreted in breast milk use with caution.


Old age: May be given in reduced dose.

CNS: Fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness 


EENT: Dry mouth


GI: Abdominal pain or distention, constipation, ileus, nausea, vomiting


SKIN: Rash (hypersensitivity)


Acts as an antidiarrheal drug whereas Atropine is added to prevent abuse.
