VALSARTAN

Indications & Dose:

Hypertension

• BY MOUTH

Adult: Initially 80 mg once daily, increased if necessary up to 320 mg daily, doses to be increased at intervals of 4 weeks

Hypertension with intravascular volume depletion

• BY MOUTH

Adult: Initially 40 mg once daily, increased if necessary up to 320 mg daily, doses to be increased at intervals of 4 weeks

Heart failure when ACE inhibitors cannot be used, or in conjunction with an ACE inhibitor when a beta-blocker cannot be used | Heart failure, in conjunction with an ACE inhibitor when a beta-blocker cannot be used (under expert supervision)

• BY MOUTH

Adult: Initially 40 mg twice daily, increased to up to 160 mg twice daily, doses to be increased at intervals of at least 2 weeks

Myocardial infarction with left ventricular failure or left ventricular systolic dysfunction (adjunct)

• BY MOUTH

Adult: Initially 20 mg twice daily, increased if necessary up to 160 mg twice daily, doses to be increased over several weeks if tolerated Children: Not recommended 

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to any of the components of valastran. Biliary cirrhosis . cholestasis, Pregnancy and lactation

Side Effects:

CNS: Dizziness, headaches

CV: Palpitations

GI: Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea,dyspepsia, flatulence, liver function test abnormalities

GU: Impotence

METAB: Hyperkalemia

MS: Back pain, muscle cramps, myalgia

RESP: Cough, dyspnea, pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis

SKIN: Pruritus and rash

MISC: Anemia, fatigue, angioedema

Angioedema (associated with aspirin and/or penicillin allergy), aortic or mitral valve stenosis, biliary cirrhosis or biliary obstruction, breast feeding period, coronary artery disease, elderlypatients, hepatic dysfunction (adjust dose), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hypotension (sodium-or volume depleted patients), pregnancy, renal artery stenosis, solitary kidney, or congestive heart failure
