DIPHENHYDRAMINE+AMMONIUM CHLORIDE

Indications & Dose:

Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis; vasomotor rhinitis; allergic conjunctivitis; symptomatic relief of common cold; allergic and nonallergic pruritic symptoms; uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema; adjunctive therapy of anaphylactic reactions; motion sickness; sleep aid; parkinsonism (including drug-induced); cough suppressant; acute dystonic reactions


DOSE


5-10mg 2-3 times daily. 

Contraindications:

Narrowangle glaucoma, bladder neck obstruction 

Side Effects:

CNS: Anxiety; confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, euphoria, fatigue, neuritis, paresthesia, poor coordination


CV: Palpitations, tachycardia


EENT: Blurred vision, dilated pupils, dry nose, throat, nasal stuffiness, tinnitus


Gl: Anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting


GU: Dysuria, frequency, impotence, retention


HEME: Bone marrow suppression, hemolytic anemia


RESP: Chest tightness, increased thick secretions, wheezing


SKIN: Photosensitivity, rash, urticaria; topical preparations can sensitize the skin

Precautions:

Liver disease, elderly, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, urinary retention, renal disease, stenosed peptic ulcers

Anticholinergics: Possible enhanced anticholinergic, CNS effects

• False negative: Skin allergy tests


• False positive: Urine methadone, serum and urine tricyclic antidepressant
