Indications & Dose:
Allergic rhinitis
Child 3–17 years: 1 mg twice daily
Adult: 1 mg twice daily, increased if necessary to 2 mg twice daily, to be taken with food
Allergic rhinitis in readily sedated patients
Adult: Initially 0.5–1 mg once daily, dose to be taken at night
OR
Adults
1-2mg twice daily with food. Initial treatment in readily sedated patients 0.5-1mg at nigh, may be increased upto 4mg.
Children
6 month to three years; 0.05mg (=0.25ml syp)/kg body weighttwice daily with meal, 3 years and above; 5ml (1 teaspoonful) or 1 tablet of 1mg twice daily, with meal
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity, glaucoma.
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, dry mouth, slight dizziness, CNS stimulation, weight gain also reported.
Cautions:
Previous anti-asthmatic treatment should be continued for a minimum of 2 weeks after initation of ketotifen treatment; avoid with oral antidiabetics (fall in thrombocyte count reported). Driving drowsiness may affect performance of skilled tasks (e.g. driving), effects of alcohol enhanced.
Precautions:
Previous antiasthmatic treatment should be continued for a maximum of 2 weeks after initiation of ketotifen treatment.
Old age: May be used.
Interaction:
Drugs
Sedatives, Hypnotics & Alcohol: May potentiate the effects of these agents, leading to CNS depression. Oral antidiabetics: Avoid as fall in thrombocyte count reported.
