Indications & Dose:

Depressive illness, particularly where sedation is required, anxiety associated with depression.



Adult: 75-150mg daily in divided doses or as a single dose in the evening


Elderly: Initially; 50- 75mg daily, increasing gradually in necessary under closed supervision.


Children: Not recommended. 

Contraindications:

Prostate hypertrophy, Acute myocardial infarction, hypersensitivity. Epilepsy, hepatic failure  & Pregnancy. 

Side Effects:

Anticholinergic side effects are common and are dry mouth, tachycardia, palpitation, impotence, constipation, difficulty in accommodation, rarely hyperpyrexia and paralytic ileus. Lethargy, headache, drowsiness, tremors, atxia, sweating, convulsion. Urticaria, skin rash, pruritis, cholestatic jaundice, cardiac arrhythmias, orthostatic hypotension, agranulocytosis, gynecomastia, galactorrhoea and dependence. Loss of wt. or gain.

Precautions:

Cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac disease, glaucoma, hyperthy-roidism, renal and hepatic disease. Abrupt withdrawal may cause withdrawal symptoms. Children less than 16 years.


Breast-feeding: Use with caution.


Old age: May be given in reduced dose.

Interaction:

Drugs : Same as imipramine.
