Indications & Dose:

Serious infections of the lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin; intra-abdominal infections, gynecologic infections, septicemia, endocarditis Antibacterial spectrum usually includes

Children


3 months and older, 60 mg/kg (up to max. of 2 g) daily in 4 divided doses.


Surgical prophylaxis by intravenous infusion,


1 g at induction of anaesthesia repeated after 3 hours, supplemented in high risk (e.g. colorectal) surgery by doses of 500 mg 8 and 16 hours after induction.


NOTE: Children not recommended by i.m route


 

Contraindications:

IM: hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type (contains lidocaine)


 


 

Side Effects:

CNS: Dizziness, fever, myoclonus, seizures, somnolence, weakness


CV: Hypotension, palpitations


GI: Diarrhea, glossitis, hepatitis, nausea, pseudomembranous colitis, vomiting


GU: Proteinuria, increased BUN/creatinine


HEME: Eosinophilia, neutropenia


RESP: Chest discomfort, dyspnea, hyperventilation


SKIN: Erythema at inj site, pain at inj site, phlebitis, pruritus, rash, urticaria

Precautions:

 Elderly, hypersensitivity to penicillins, seizure disorders, renal disease, children < 12 yr 

Interaction:

Drugs Cyclosporine, tacrolimus: Risk of CNS toxicity


Theophylline: Increased seizure risk without elevated theophylline levels
