AMOXYCILLIN /CLAVULANIC ACID

Indications & Dose:

Infections of the lower respiratory tract, ear, sinuses, skin and soft tissues, urinary tract caused by susceptible organisms


DOSE


Adults Pneumonia and serious infections: 500mg amoxycillin and 125mg calvulanic acid every 8 hours for 7-10 days. Other infections: 250mg of amoxycillin and 125mg of clavulanic acid every 8 hours for 7-10 days.


Children Upto 40kg of body wt.: 6.7mg amoxycillin and 1.7 clavulanic acid per kg body wt. every 8 hour for 7- 10 days. For severe infections: 13.3mg amoxycillin and 3.3 clavulanic acid per kg body wt. for 7-10 days.

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, renal insufficiency, prolonged or repeated therapy, mononucleosis

Atenolol: Reduced serum concentration of atenolol Chloramphenicol: Inhibited antibacterial activity of amoxicillin; administer amoxicillin 3 hours before chloramphenicol


Macrolide antibiotics: Inhibited antibacterial activity of amoxicillin; administer amoxicillin 3 hours before macrolides


Methotrexate: Increased serum methotrexate concentrations


Oral contraceptives: Occasional impairment of oral contraceptive efficacy; consider use of supplementary contraception during cycles in which amoxicillin is used


Tetracyclines: Inhibited antibacterial activity of amoxicillin; administer amoxicillin 3 hours before tetracycline

CNS: Fever, headache


GI: Abdominal pain, black tongue, colitis, diarrhea, (9%) glossitis, increased AST, ALT, nausea, pseudomembranous colitis, vomiting


GU: Moniliasis, vaginitis


HEME: Bone marrow depression, eosinophilia, increased bleeding time


METAB: Alkalosis, hyperkalemia, hypernatremia, hypokalemia


MISC.: Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, erythema multiform, exfoliative dermatitis, anaphylaxis)
