CYCLOSERINE

Indications & Dose:

Pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (like all antituberculosis drugs, cycloserine should be administered in conjunction with other eJfective chemotherapy and not as the sole therapeutic agent); acute UTI caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gramnegative bacteria, especially Ente robacter spp. and E. coli (when more conventional therapy has failed and when the organism has been demonstrated to be susceptible to the drug)


DOSAGE Adult


PO 250 mg q l2h X 2 wk, then 250 mg q8h X 2 wk, then 250 mg q6h if there are no signs of toxicity; not to exceed I g/day


Child


PO 10-20 mg/kg/day ql2h (max 0.75-1 g); individualize doses 

Contraindications:

Seizure disorders, severe renal disease, alcoholism (chronic), depression, severe anxiety, psychosis 

Side Effects:

CNS: Aggression, anxiety, confusion, depression, drowsiness, headache, lethargy, psychosis, seizures, tremors


CV:. CHF


HEME: Leukocytosis, megaloblastic anemia, vitamin B 12' folic acid deficiency


SKIN: Dermatitis, photosensitivity
