LOMEFLOXACIN

Indications & Dose:

Infections of the lower respiratory tract, urinary tract; prevention of UTI in patients undergoing transurethral procedures; gonorrhea

DOSE

Adult 

• Usually : PO 400 mg once dail;y

• Lower respiratory tract: PO 400 mg qd for 10 days

• Urinary tract: PO 400 mg qd for 3-14 days

• Prophylaxis: PO 400 mg as a single dose 2-6 hr prior to surgery

• Gonorrhea: PO 400 mg as a single dose

• Renal function impairment: PO 400 mg loading dose, then 200 mg qd for duration of treatment (CrCI <40 ml/min/1.73 m2)

Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400mg once daily for 10 days.

Cystitis 400mg once daily for 10 days. Complicated Urinary Tract infections: 400mg once daily for 14 days.

Children: Not recommended.

Contraindications:

 Hypersensitivity to quinolones

Side Effects:

CNS: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, fatigue, headache, insomnia, seizures, somnolence

EENT: Dizziness, visual disturbances

GI: Abdominal pain, anorexia, diarrhea, dry mouth, flatulence, heartburn, increased AST, ALT; nausea, pseudomembranous colitis, vomiting

SKIN: Photosensitivity, pruritus, rash

Drugs

Aluminium: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Antacid : Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Calcium: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Cimetidine: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Didanosine: Markedly reduced absorption of lorneiloxacin; take lomefloxacin 2 hr before didanosine

Famotidine: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Iron: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Lansoprazole: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Magnesium: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Nizatidine: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Omeprazole: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Ranitidine: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin

Sodium bicarbonate: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Sucralfate: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose

Warfarin: May increase hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin

Zinc: Reduced absorption of lomefloxacin; do not take within 4 hr of dose
