Indications & Dose:

Paget’s Disease
Adult:

• BY INJECTION

IM,SC 100 units daily than 50 units per dayor 50100 units every 1-3 days, maintainance dose HC, SC initially o.5mg /day, max; 0.5mg twice daily

Hypcalcemia

Adult;

• BY INJECTION

SC/IM 4 IU/kg q 12h; may increase to 8 U/kg q6h if needed.

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Adult:

SC/IM 100 IU/d. 

• BY INTRANASAL:

1 spray (200 IU) daily, alternate nostrils. 

Contraindications:

CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUATIONS: 

Contraindicated in:hypersensitivity to fish proteins or to synthetic calcitonins; history ofallergy. Safe use in children, pregnancy (category C), nursing mothers not established. Cautious use in: renal impairment; osteoporosis; pernicious anaemia; Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Side Effects Or Adverse Reactions:

Gl:transient nausea, vomiting, anorexia, unusual taste sensation, abdominal pain, diarrhoea.

Skin: inflammatory reactions at injection site, flushing of face or hands, pruritus  of ear lobes, edema of feet, skin rashes. 

Other: headache, eye pain, nocturia, diuresis, feverish sensation, hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis, abnormal urine sediment. Reported for calcitonin human only: urinary frequency, chills, chest pressure, weakness, paresthesias, tender palms and soles, dizziness, nasal congestion, shortness of breath.
