Indications & Dose:
Amino acid deficiency.
Dose: One tab daily.
Children: Not recommended
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with anuria; patients with inborn errors of amino acid metabolism, such as maple syrup urine disease and isovaleric academia; and patients with severe uncorrected electrolyte or acid-base imbalances, hyperammonemia, or decreased circulating blood volume. Use cautiously in neonates (especially those with low birth weight), children, and patients with impaired renal, hepatic, or cardiac function.

Drug-drug. Acidic I.V. solutions for total parenteral nutrition
(TPN): May release bicarbonate as gas. Avoid use together. Amino acid solutions: May be incompatible.
Don’t mix together.
Blood: May cause pseudoagglutination. Don’t give with blood. Electrolytes, heparin, insulin, supplementary vitamins,
trace minerals: May be added cautiously when needed. Don’t give other drugs via central venous catheter.
Folic acid: Calcium salts precipitate as calcium folate. Avoid use together.
Sodium bicarbonate: May precipitate calcium and magnesium and decrease activity of insulin and vitamin B complex with vitamin C. Avoid use together.
Tetracycline: May reduce protein-sparing effects of infused amino acids. Use together cautiously Vitamin K. May be incompatible. Give separately

Side Effects Or Adverse Reactions:
CNS: fever.
CV: flushing, edema, thrombophlebitis, thrombosis.
GI: nausea.
GU: glycosuria, osmotic diuresis.
Hepatic: hepatic dysfunction.
Metabolic: alkalosis, electrolyte imbalances, hyperammonemia, hyperglycemia, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome, hypophosphatemia, metabolic acidosis, rebound hypoglycemia (when long-term infusions are abruptly stopped), weight gain.
Musculoskeletal: osteoporosis.
Skin: tissue sloughing at infusion site caused by extravasation.
Other: catheter sepsis, hypersensitivity reactions
. Effects on lab test results
May increase ammonia, BUN, serum creatinine, and liver enzyme levels. May decrease phosphate, magnesium, and potassium levels. May increase or decrease glucose levels.
