Indications & Dose:
Pylorospasm toxicosis and dystrophy, oral & pharyngeal obstruction in premature infants and cases where sufficient oral nutrition is not possible. Prophylaxis and therapy of protein deficiency in adults. Paed infusion. For neonates and babies upto the age of 2. (Of IV infusion) Pre & post operative conditions in which it is difficult or impossible to give food/ nutrition orally or by gastric tube. Malabsorption and impaired digestion and assimilation in various gastric disorders such malignant disease, ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, necrotizing enterocolitis. Severe protein deficiency and high metabolic demand of protein due to extensive burns, severe trauma, fracture of long bones. (Of oral preparations). Hypoproteinemia, Pre & post surgery, chemotherapy. Pregnancy and lactation. Prolonged illness and geriatric patients.
Contraindications:
Shock, coma, anuria, disturbed amino acid metabolism, advanced liver function failure, cardiac insufficiency, hyperhydration, hypokalemia, hyponatremia. Irreversible hepatic damage, risk of cardiac decompensation due to fluid overload.
Side Effects:
Nausea, shivering, vomiting when infusion rate is high
Cautions:
Tendency towards elevated serum potassium or urea level, patients with high degree of acidosis and congestive heart failure.
Precautions:
If injected rapidly can cause nausea and vomiting.
