Betaxolol HCL

Indications & Dose:

Chronic open angle glaucoma & lowering of intraocular pressure. 


DOSE


Adult 1 drop twice daily.
Children Not recommended.

Contraindications:

Sinus bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, uncompensated cardiac failure & soft lenses.

History of obstructive airways disease, diabetes, thyrotoxicosis & general anaesthesia.


PRECAUTIONS: History of diabetes, cardiac failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, thyrotoxicosis, general anaesthesia & closed angle glaucoma.

Interaction:

Drugs
Adenosine: Increased risk of bradycardia response


Antacids: Decreased absorption of oral betaxolol


Antidiabetics: Altered response to hypoglycemia, prolonged recovery of normoglycemia, hypertension, blockade of tachycardia; may increase blood glucose and impair peripheral circulation


Dipyridamole: Bradycardia


Neostigmine: Additive risk of bradycardia


NSAIDs: Reduced hypotensive effects of ß-blockers


Tacrine: Additive bradycardia


Theophylline: Antagonistic pharmacodynamic effects


Verapamil: Enhanced effects of both drugs, particularly atrioventricular conduction slowings

Side Effects Or Adverse Reactions:

CNS: Depression, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, hallucinations, insomnia, lethargy, memory loss, mental changes, strange dreams
CV: Bradycardia, CHF, cold extremities, profound hypotension, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block
EENT: Blepharoptosis, diplopia, dry burning eyes, keratitis, ptosis, sore throat, visual disturbances
GI: Diarrhea, dry mouth, ischemic colitis, mesenteric arterial thrombosis, nausea, vomiting
GU: Impotence, sexual dysfunction
HEME: Agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia
METAB: Hyperlipidemia (increase TG, total cholesterol, LDL; decrease HDL), masked hypoglycemic response to insulin (sweating excepted)
RESP: Bronchospastn, dyspnea
SKIN: Alopecia, pruritis, rash
