Indications & Dose:

Prophylaxis of acute rejection in allogeneic renal transplantation used in combination with ciclosporin and corticosteroid-containing immunosuppression regimens (specialist use only) 



INTRAVENOUS INFUSION


Adult: Initially 20 mg, administered within 2 hours before transplant surgery, followed by 20 mg after 4 days, dose to be administered after surgery, withhold second dose if severe hypersensitivity or graft loss occurs 

Contraindications:

Known hypersensitivity to basiliximab or any other component of the formulation.
Children


In pediatric patients : i.v. infusion over 20-30 minutes or as a bolus injection. Weighing less than 40kg, 20mg given in 2 doses of 10mg each. 40kg or more; 40mg given in 2 doses of 20mg each.


Elderly Same as adult dose

Side Effects:

Urinary tract infection, pain, nausea, peripheral edema, hypertension, 94 patients receiving the recommended dose in uncontrolled trials.

Should be prescribed only by physicians who are experienced in the use of immuno-suppressive therapy following organ transplantation.
