Mercaptopurine

Indications & Dose:

In combination therapy scedules for acute leukaemia, choriocarcinoma, chronic granulocytic leukaemia.
DOSE


Adult and children


Usually 2.5mg/kg body weight daily

Contraindications:

Side Effects:

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cholestasis, bone marrow depression, pancreatitis, oral and intestinal ulcers. Rarely hepatic necrosis.

Impaired renal and hepatic function, monitor uric acid level, blood counts and hepatic functions 

Interaction:

Drugs
Allopurinol; Delayed catabolism of mercapturine resulting in severe toxicity. Dose of mercapturine should be reduced to one third to one-quarter of usual dose


Other mylosuppresive agents; Enhance antineoplastic effect of mercapturine


Sulphonamides; May result in enhancd bone marrow depression
