Carboplatin

Indications & Dose:

1st & 2nd line therapy in ovarian carcinoma of epithelial origin.


DOSE Continous in glucose 5% or Sodium Chloride 0.9% final concentration as low as 500 mcg/ml give over 15-60 minutes.


Adults i.v, infusion only; 400mg/m2 BSA as single dose over 15-60 mins. by infusion; don’t repeat for 4 weeks. See literature 360mg/m2 i.v. every 4 weeks.

Contraindications:

Breast-feeding. History of severe allergic reactions to cisplatin or other platinum compounds or mannitol. Severe bone marrow depression. Significant bleeding

Side Effects:

Vomiting, thrombocytopenia, raised alkaline phosphatase. Abnormally decreased serum electrolyte values. Pain, asthenia.

Cautions:

Reduce dose in renal impairment. 

Precautions:

Aluminium can react with carboplatin so do not use needles or i.v. sets containing aluminium parts that may come in contact with carboplatin. High doses can result in severe liver function abnormalities.
Pregnancy: Use with caution only if benefit outweigh potential risk.
Old age: May be given in reduced dose.
