Polio Vaccine

Indications & Dose:

• Poliovirus immunization (IPV).

Infants and children (primary series): TThe dose of OPV is 2-3 drops being dropped directly into the mouth of the child.

DOSAGE:

As per guideline of WHO or refer to manfufacturer.

Contraindications:

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the vaccine or any of its components, including phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin B. A history of delayedtype hypersensitivity reaction to neomycin is generally not a contraindication.

Use cautiously in siblings of children with immunodeficiency syndrome.

Interaction:

Drug-drug. Immune serum globulin, transfusions of blood or blood products: May interfere with immune response to vaccine. Defer vaccination for 3 months

Chemotherapeutic drugs, immunosuppressants (alkylating agents, antimetabolites, steroids), radiation treatment: May decrease immunologic response to IPV. Defer IPV until other therapy stops. If patient receives IPV within 2 weeks before receiving chemotherapy or radiation, consider the patient unimmunized and re-vaccinate at least 3 months after chemotherapy or radiation stops.

CNS: fever, sleepiness.
GI: decreased appetite
Skin: erythema, induration, pain (at injection site).
Other: crying, hypersensitivity reactions, poliomyelitis.
