Rabies Vaccines

Indications & Dose:

Active immunisation against rabies may be used as part of post exposure treatment. Preexposure prophylaxis against rabies in high risk persons like dog handlers etc.

Rabies vaccines may be:

(i) Purified chick embryo cell rabies vaccine.

(ii) Inactivated Rabies vaccine prepared on vero cells. This vaccine for the pre or post-exposure immunization against rabies is obtained by culture on vero continuous cell lines.

(iii) Human Diploid Cell Rabies Vaccine

DOSE 

After exposure start immediately a full course of treatment for both adults and children consists of 6 injections on days 0 (day of exposure), 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90. The sixth dose on day 90 is optional.

If the animal is suspected to be rabid then in addition to above the person should receive rabies immunoglobulin (human origin) at a dose of 40i.u./ kg of body weight. This injection should be given together with the first dose of vaccine, but at different sites.

Prophylaxis (before exposure) a full course of prophylactic vaccination consists of 1 dose of vaccine on days 0, 28 and 56 or in more urgent cases on day 0, 7 and 21. 

Prophylaxis: Four doses of 1ml each s.c or i.m. on day 0, 7, 21 and 365. Booster dose 1ml every three years

Contraindications:

Acute infectious diseases, currently evolving diseases. For immunization after exposure none. For prophylaxis

postpone in pregnancy. Hypersensitivity to constituents of vaccine

Side Effects:

Pain, reddening and swelling at injection site, swollen lymph nodes, joint pains and G.I. complaints.
