Polymyxin/Bacitracn

Indications & Dose:

INDICATIONS: Where superficial skin infection these include prophylaxis in burns, graft donor sites, surgical incisions, accidental cuts, scratches and abrasions.tharapeutic use in primary infected dermatoses, such as impetigo, bacterial otitis externa,ecthyma,folliculitis and paronychia;in secondary infected dermatoses,such as infected eczema, secondary infected lesions of infestations and secondary bacterial infection accompanying viral infections. Treatment of infected ulcers, accidental cuts, scratches and abrasions, and superficial skin infections following surgical procedures and burns.

DOSAGE :

Adults: Apply two or more times daily

Contraindications:

CONTRAINDICATIONS:the use of polymyxin B sulphate,bacitracin zinc or to cross-sensitizing substances.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS: as with other antibacterial preparations, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.

Topical ointment: following application to extensive areas of raw skin, the possibility of systemic absorption of the active ingredients exist.

Interaction:

Following significant systemic absorption,polymyxin B sulphate can intensify and prolong the respiratory depressant effects of neuromuscular blocking agents.

Pregnancy and lactation:

Pregnancy:it has been used for several years without any evidence of untoward effects in pregnancy. the clinical benefit of treatment to the patient must be balanced against any possible, but unknown hazards to the developing foetus.

Allergic hypersensitivity following topical application of polymyxin B sulphate and bacitracin zinc is rare but has been reported. anaphylactic reactions following topical application of bacitracin zinc have been reported.

OVERDOSAGE:

TOPICAL OINTMENT: if toxic symptoms develop following significant systemic absorption of the active ingredients of polymyxin Bbacitracin ointment, treatment with the product should be stopped and the patient’s general status, renal function and neuromuscular function should be monitored and blood levels of polymyxin B sulphate and bacitracin zinc determined.
