| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: It can be diagnosed on clinical grounds alone. In doubtful cases diagnosis can be confirmed by the demonstration of specific antibodies; or the virus can be cultured from saliva or from the CSF in meningitis. |

| Management | |
| Introduction | Mumps is caused by a Paramyxo virus which spreads by droplet infection and affects mainly children of school age and young adult. The incubation period is about 18 days. |

| Etiology | Etiology: (of parotid swelling) 1. Mumps. 2. Calculi with or without sepsis 3. Sarcoidosis. 4. Mixed cell tumour. 5. Hypersensitivity to thiouracil, phenothiazine, iodide, copper, lead, mercury. |
| Clinical Features | Clinical features: Malaise, fever, trismus and pain near the angle of the jaw is soon followed by tender swelling of one or both parotid glands. Parotid swelling alone is often the first feature. The submandibular salivary gland may also be involved. The swelling of the gland subsides in a few days. Orchitis may occur, manifested by pain & testicular swelling. There may be obscure abdominal pain due to pancreatitis or oophoritis. Acute lymphocytis, meningitis or encephalitis (rarely) may occur. |
| Preventions | |
| Treatment | Treatment: 1. Patient should be isolated till the swelling subsides. 2. Bed rest till the patient is afebrile. 3. Both heat and cold may be comforting and applied according to the choice or response of the patient. 4. Aspirin in the usual dosage for releif of pain. 5. For Meningoencephalitis- a. Lumber puncture, b. Corticosteroids, if symptoms are severe. 6. For Orchitis- a. Ice bag is to be applied locally. b. Use of suspensory bandage. c. Analgesics for pain e.g. paracetamol, Aspirin, or pethidine. d. Prednisolone 40mg daily in divided doses for 4 days. |
