| Name | CUTANEOUS CANDIDIASIS |
| Cause | In cutaneous candidiasis, the skin is infected with candida fungi. This type of infection is fairly common. It can involve almost any skin on the body, but most often it occurs in warm, moist, creased areas such as the armpits and groin. The fungus that most often causes cutaneous candidiasis is Candida albicans |
| Signs Symptoms | Candida infection of the skin can cause intense itching. Symptoms also include: Red, growing skin rash. Rash on the skin folds, genitals, middle of the body, buttocks, under the breasts, and other areas of skin. |

| Management | Topical antifungal agents, including nystatin, miconazole nitrate (Micatin, Monistat-Derm), or clotrimazole creams, are generally curative. One-time oral therapy with fluconazole (150 mg) or itraconazole (600 mg) is effective and may be a more attractive alternative to some patients |
| Introduction | Occurs most commonly in the genital or periumbilical areas. The lesions are initially vesicular with an erolar of erythema. These vesicles become confluent forming a moist erosion surrounded by satellite pustules. |

| Treatment | Treatment: 1. The affected areas are exposed to air. Frequent diaper changes are advised. Impermeable plastic panties should be avoided. 2. Nystatin cream or ointment is applied topically at each diaper change. 3. In difficult cases, simultaneous oral nystatin at 1,00,000 units 6 hourly may be helpful. ORAL THRUSH Treatment: OeaJ nystettn 1,60,000 unit 6-hourly for 7-10 days; Or, Gentian violet solution- apply twice daily for 3 days; Or, Clotrimazole oral gel- apply 2-3 times daily for 7 days. |
| Complications | Infection of the nails may cause the nails to become oddly shaped and may cause an infection around the nail. Candida skin infections may return. Widespread candidiasis may occur in people with weakened immune systems. |
| Prognosis | Untreated disease may carry a mortality rate of 8-40% |
