| Management | Procedure same as for arterial catheterisation except that the vein is thin-walled and is usually the vessel that bleeds when cord is cut. Direction of vessel is upward towards head instead of caudally as in the artery. Catheter is inserted slowly until blood is obtained (usually approximately 5-10cm). Purpose of umbilical catheterisation: 1. Arterial blood sampling (arterial route). 2. Exchage transfusion. 3. Intravenous fluid therapy. 4. Intravenous antibiotics. 5. Blood or plasma transfusion. 3,4 & 5 - only if unable to insert drip into scalp or peripheral vein. |
