Test:

WCC (H), ESR (H), S.f ibrin degradation products(H), S.bilirubin (H or N), S.LDH (H), Sfibrinogen (H), arterial p0, (L), technetium' scan (AB), chest X-ray (unreliable), pulmonary angiography (AB)

Sign:

Dyspnoea, raised jugular venous pressure, pleu­ral rub, hypotension

Dd:

Myocardial infarct, bacterial pneumonia, asthma,pulmonary oedema, ,pericarditis, atelectasis, pneumothorax, aortic aneurysm, tumours, pleu­risy, acute upper abdominal disease, chest trau­ma

Phys:

Due to blocking of small pulmonary arteries by de­tached thrombus or other foreign matter. May be caused by occult malignancy
